So it's back in all it's gory glory. Anyone who thought that now that Warner Brothers have the license after midway sadly went bust, would tone down the violence or the gore, need not have worried. If anything it's been amped up! Now on top of the most gruesome fatalities yet, we now have the x-ray attacks that do what they say on the tin. Once activated, we see through the skin and wince as bones and muscles are displayed being broken, shattered and bent in ways that the human body is not supposed to bend! This is in your face and gloriously over the top! Characters now have three fatalities to their name, the first being easy to perform and the other two are locked. They can be bought as you collect koins for winning fights. But coins can also be collected in the story mode, one on one fights and the RPG style Krohnicle story. So is this just a rehash or a proper reboot? I'd say it's a proper reboot of the franchise but they have not been afraid to tip the hat to what has gone before and that's no bad thing. I am happy they have acknowledged the work that Midway put into this. Midway built a legacy, a literally legendary game franchise that for this reviewer, is better than Street Fighter and beats Virtua Fighter too. The only other beat 'em up titles that for me come close to rivaling this franchise are the excellent soul calibre and Dead or Alive (ahem 5 anybody?) Graphically all fighters move smoothly and are beautifully rendered. Backgrounds are nicely detailed (if you ever get the chance to admire them!) and the crowds watching in some arenas whoop and holler as the fists fly and the blood spatters. You can angle attacks with the left stick, so you can attack from the right or the left not just head on. All blows sound like well, heavy hits that will make you go 'ouch' even as a slow smile spreads across your face as you lay the smackdown on your rival. Game modes: Story mode is here and it's clear that the story has been rebooted. I won't give spoilers away here. Khronicle mode is the RPG style adventure that we have come to be used too. Here costume parts can be unlocked so you can create a fighter or alter the appearance of existing fighters. Then there's the challenge tower. This is the hardest mode here so be warned, it will test you for sure! Online combat is available as well, so there's more than enough to get your teeth into. Unlock costume parts and spend your koins in the graveyard to actually secure them. Yes we've seen this before but I like the fact that they have not run roughshod over all that Midway did for the series. Midway's efforts have been acknowledged, and I expect the reboot isn't finished yet, The next game apparently will be called Mortal Kombat 2. Yes 2, not thirteen or whatever number midway reached! So is it all pro's? What about the Cons? Are there any? yes. Sometimes you'll find an a.i. opponent that can counter, block and make life a misery like no other. The sense of satisfaction of beating such a s.o.b is great indeed, but you may well be tempted to launch the control pad into orbit before then. But there is a lot of fun to be had here, just don't let little Johnny get his hands on it. There's an 18 rating on this and for good reason. Strong nerves and perhaps a strong stomach are needed to play this bad boy! Now in the words of Skorpion, Get over here! The earth realm needs saving.....
