It may have lost the GOTY recognition against Baldur’s Gate 3 but one can’t deny that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the perfect sequel to, arguably, one of the best video games ever made – Breath of the Wild (just my opinion). But even Ninty agrees that this particular iteration of Link’s journey exhausted all possibilities and now we’ve got an official confirmation that we won’t be getting (yet another) sequel.

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Eiji Aonuma, the iconic producer with over three decades of involvement in The Legend of Zelda franchise, clarified that there are no plans for a third installment. The primary reason is that Tears is already considered the "apotheosis" of this specific subseries. As he said:

“[…] As I’ve mentioned previously, with Tears of the Kingdom, we were seeking to build on top of the world we created with Breath of the Wild and really exhaust the possibilities of what we could put into that world,” Aonuma explained. “I think it is — to use a bit of a term — an apotheosis, or the final form of that version of The Legend of Zelda. In that regard, I don’t think that we’ll be making a direct sequel to a world such as that that we’ve created.”

I won’t lie, I will miss this incarnation of Hyrule a lot but I think Ninty made the right decision here. There’s only so much one can offer without running out of options and switching to a “milk it until it’s dead” concept. Looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for Hyrule…in whatever new iterations they come up with.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now on Nintendo Switch.
