Nintendo have announced that Splatoon 3, a game that launched this Friday, managed to sell a staggering 3,45 million copies in the first three days in Japan, breaking the previous Switch release records in the country. What a feat!

Launching on September 9, Splatoon 3 sees the return of team-based multiplayer gameplay, as octolings and squid kids fight to capture territory across different maps and mods. Splatoon 3 features the familiar paint-sloshing action and it’s set against a dystopian landscape that happens to be the aftermath of Splatoon 2‘s final Splatfest favoring “Chaos” over “Order”.

Hardly anyone expected the new sequel to be a record-breaker and the new fastest-selling Nintendo Switch title in its native Japan, but there we have it. It would be interesting to see sales from Europe and North America as well, and there is no doubt they would make this record even more impressive. As it stands now, this is one of the most successful Switch releases of the year.

Splatoon 3 is available now on Nintendo Switch.
