The highly anticipated sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie is now premiering in our cinemas, and the movie saw immediate success in US theaters. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 saw the biggest opening for any video game movie ever, earning $71 million USD in the first three days already.

The movie saw an opening box office 22% higher than the original 2020 release. Even though the first Sonic movie aired just when the COVID-19 pandemic started, it’s still an impressive record nonetheless. And other than the US, the movie is doing great in Europe as well.

Paramount executive Chris Aronson gave a comment to Deadline regarding this incredible achievement: “ Sonic 2 ‘s record opening is a victory for Paramount and for the industry at large. The filmmakers did an amazing job of crafting a film that is both in service of Sonic’s legions of fans as well as the general and family audience. Growing a franchise is no small feat and having an opening +22% over the first film is a remarkable achievement. Kudos to the filmmakers and to the marketing and distributions teams at Paramount for doing a fantastic job in bringing the film into the global marketplace!”

The plot sees our favorite Blue Blur teaming up with his iconic sidekick Tails to recover the Chaos Emerald before the evil Dr. Robotnik (played by the legendary Jim Carey once again) and his new ally Knuckles lay their hands on it.

The success of these two Sonic movies will likely lead to Paramount building a Sonic Cinematic Universe (they’ve already said they’re planning to do it).

If you didn’t watch the movie yet, make sure you do so as soon as possible!
