Silkworm and Rogue Games have announced that a retro-inspired mash of genres titled Super Mega Zero is heading to Nintendo Switch and PC on April 21.

The game sees Miss Undefined kidnapped by an evil Kill Screen (what a name…thumbs up for creativity, folks) and now it’s up to you to save her. Btw, your name here will be Zero (yet another point for creativity from my side). You can expect an exciting race across hundreds of levels that offer an intelligent mix of platforming, puzzling, and some shoot-em-up gameplay. Each level is handcrafted, and it offers frantic fast-paced action.

If you’ve already played games like Celeste or Super Meat Boy, you pretty much know what you can expect here. The shooting levels look like they are directly inspired by top-down classics like Ikaruga and iconic side-scrolling titles like R-Type, so that’s even more nostalgia right there. As you progress through the game, you’ll be able to upgrade and improve Zeros abilities and eventually turn him into a bonafide Hero.  You will find plenty of collectible Pis along the way, and this will help you find hidden secrets throughout the game as well.

The publisher (Rogue Games) have also written a blog post where they’ve presented the game as a remake of a fictional 1989 game called Mega Zero. And it looks great.
