Derek Yu has announced via the official Twitter that we definitely won't be getting Spelunky 2 this year. As he said: "density and detail of the game" caused the team to reschedule the release date and move it into 2020. Luckily, though, the development is "still going well" so that's reassuring.
He also apologized for unintentionally sporadic updates and stated that it's all about communication with fans and overall progress in general. The team is now focusing on a sequel and once it's ready for release, the community will be the first to find out the release date.
We might be surprised along the way as well since Yu also added: "all the crazy stuff we're adding makes me buzz with excitement". So, the team is obviously doing something epic, and let's just hope that we are all in for a majestic surprise.
