Every Zelda game has a reputable spot on the overall storyline, but not Breath of the Wild. Eiji Aonuma revealed that Breath of the Wild will not be put on the series' timeline at all.

Speaking about the game, he noted that putting the game on the timeline would remove the need for imagination, which is exactly what the game is all about. In Breath of the Wild, you are the one who decides where the plot should be placed.

As he said: "'In books like the recently released The Legend of Zelda Encyclopedia, we revealed where each Zelda game fell on a timeline and how their stories related, but we didn't do that for Breath of the Wild. There is a reason for that. With this game, we saw just how many players were playing in their own way and had those reactions I just mentioned. We realized that people were enjoying imagining the story that emerged from the fragmental imagery we were providing. If we defined a restricted timeline, then there would be a definitive story, and it would eliminate the room for imagination, which wouldn't be as fun'".

Breath of the Wild was released back in March 2017 and it's easily one of the best Zelda games ever. Oh, and it's also one of the best games ever. Period.
