2016's end is nearing quickly, and fortunately, this year has not seen a drought of amazing video game releases. From Uncharted 4 and Mirror's Edge: Catalyst to Blizzard's hit, Overwatch, we've witnessed several hits throughout the year. Action Adventure games and MMOs aren't the only thing lighting up the consoles around the world, RPGs have also been seen in the spotlight.

10. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness may have suffered a few blows with the reviews, especially by fans of the franchise who waited seven years for another release, but not everyone was left with a sense of wanting. With its fantasy meets sci-fi premise, updated seamless battle system, and amazing soundtrack, the newest installment of Star Ocean is deeply entertaining.

9. Champions of Anteria

Ubisoft's newly released RPG provides you the ability to build your own kingdom while taking control of five champions. With your choice of warriors and elements, you're able to gain the upper hand in each battle. This fun strategy RPG that doesn't take itself too seriously and its array of unique allies makes Champions of Anteria a must-play.

8. Bravely Second: End Layer

Square Enix is at it again! The sequel to Bravely Default brings back the charm, graphics and battle system of the original. But this one also has a chain-battle feature where you can continue to battle enemies for both greater risk and reward. Add to that, the option to change the voice-overs to the impressive Japanese voice-acting with English subtitles, Bravely Second is definitely not a disappointment to fans of the series.

7. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

The WII U seen to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, a crossover between the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series, release this year. The chapter based RPG alternates between real-world Tokyo and Idolaspheres, an alternate universe where enemies appear. This game offers light-hearted fun as it pokes fun at Japanese entertainment, exciting combat, and loads of style and charm.

6. I Am Setsuna

This angled top-down RPG created by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix tells us a highly emotional tale of our protagonist, Setsuna. As we follow her through her journey, we are seamlessly transitioned into combat mode, introduced to lovely and well-developed characters, and provided with a beautiful soundtrack.

5. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Mankind Divided continues Adam Jensen's journey with this new installment. Enter a cyberpunk themed adventure where you can choose to either go in with guns blazing or use a stealthy approach. A first person perspective with a third person cover system, along with a role-playing upgrade system and dialogue trees, brings you the very best in video game entertainment.

4.  Grim Dawn

Grim Dawn is exactly as the title suggests - a grim and dark epic role-playing game. For fans of Diablo, this is the perfect hack and slash adventure. A massive, dense world with serious combat, and a gore encrusted environment makes this a fun game for fans of the action genre.

3. Salt and Sanctuary

Resembling the well-known series Dark Souls, Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D platformer that follows a shipwrecked sailor on an uncharted island. The game features a grimly attractive art style, fun combat, and several moments of surprise and excitement. Its extensive character building, challenging enemies, and stylized combat, this RPG is definitely rewarding for its players.

As beautiful as the first, The Banner Saga 2 continues its powerful storytelling. With a vast array of complex characters and battles, The Banner Saga 2 will leave you breathless as you travel on this strategy based adventure. You can't help but be embraced by the inhabitants and their struggles.

1. Dark Souls 3

A top ten RPG list wouldn't be complete without mentioning Dark Souls 3. Known for its challenging gameplay, this game takes you to a universe of interesting and inhuman opponents, incredible combat scenarios that forces you to adapt to a thinking adversary. Not a button masher by any means. The challenges are both rich and rewarding and the story is a fascinating experience. A must play for all adventure seekers.
