With the defeat of the Earth Defense Force at the hands of Alec Mason and the Red Faction, the inhabitants of Mars assumed their sacrifices would allow future generations to live in peace. For a time, the Colonists lived - and prospered - with their Marauder brethren.

But all good things must come to an end.

Decades later, Mars is shattered. An apocalyptic cult has turned the surface into a wasteland, and forced the survivors deep underground. Disheartened by their failure to protect the planet, Darius Mason - grandson of the fabled Martian hero—has left the Red Faction for a life of mining and scavenging deep in the ancient Ultor mines.

And in the dark...something has been awakened.
