Movie Games and Vaporware have just released their neon-soaked FPS Beyond Sunset into Steam Early Access. It’s expected it will stay there for six months before full launch.

Beyond Sunset is yet another first-person shooter built in the GZDoom Engine (an expanded port of the engine that 1993’s Doom was built on). Previously, we’ve seen the same engine used with games like Selaco and Supplice. Beyond Itself presents itself as a cyberpunk shooter with “a rich story and RPG elements.” You get to play as a woman with no memory but incredible skills and abilities. Apparently, you can get those memories back if you kick some people’s asses in return. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

The RPG elements include ability upgrades and sidequests. It also features a soundtrack done by Karl Vincent, who is touted as a “synthwave legend.” Apparently, the game is also very mod-friendly, but I guess it comes as no surprise given the fact that the engine is open-source.

The game looks outstanding and I’m really digging these lo-fi aesthetics and the prevalent neon theme. I will check it out when it launches, for sure.

Beyond Sunset is available now on Steam Early Access. The full launch will happen in six months. The Early Access FAQ says the current state of the game is “mostly finished – only minor tweaks and polishes are left.”
