The rumors say that the next Sonic the Hedgehog game scheduled for release in 2022 might be named Sonic Frontiers.

The title was spotted by Gematsu, who reports that Sega have filed several trademarks for the name on October 22. Other than filing a trademark in its native Japanese, they did the same for the English language too. On top of that, we also have a Reddit insider claiming that Sonic Frontiers would be the name of the new Sonic game, adding that it’s gonna be an  “open-world game with a similar style” to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Sega haven’t commented on either of these rumors. The new Sonic game was first revealed at the end of a special broadcast that was prepared to celebrate our favorite blue blur’s 30th anniversary. The same broadcast also confirmed the existence of the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate that launched in September.

We didn’t get a lot of details on the brand new Sonic game since then, however, other than the game’s producer Takashi Iizuka saying that he hopes the title would “lay the foundations” for a new generation of Sonic titles and adding that “the development team has been spending their time to do something new and challenging.”

We hope to hear more about this new Sonic game soon enough. At the moment, we know that it will launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
