Blizzard have announced a new name for the hero that we knew as McCree in Overwatch and it will be Cole Cassidy.

The new name was revealed on the official Twitter account of Overwatch. The former Jesse McCree will get a name change in an update that goes live tomorrow. Blizzard have previously announced they are planning to change the name of the popular hero back in August as a result of the well-known ongoing sexual harassment lawsuit against the State of California.

Here’s what we can read in the blurb regarding the new update: “The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago. Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become. But in every cowboy’s life, there comes a time when he has to stop and make a stand. To make this new Overwatch better—to make things right—he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at dawn.”

Blizzard have also announced that they are offering everyone a free BattleTag name change. From now until November 5, you can request a name change via the official Overwatch website. It applies to anyone who doesn’t currently have a free one available, but it won’t stack for future use.

Blizzard have previously stated that they would remove all references in-game to real-world people and events following the lawsuit. They’ve also canceled a planned new narrative arc update for McCree/Cole Cassidy and instead, they’ve released a new map back in September. Meanwhile, they are continuing the work on the upcoming Overwatch 2, but without its original executive producer.
